linux says i only have 15MB RAM but i've got 64MB in one DIMM.
Tried to fix in lilo.conf with append="mem=64M" didn't seem to work.
I thought linux autodetected any amount of ram under 64MB anyway.
but theres nothing wrong with my ram coz windows seems to work ok

In your bios, disable the "Memory Hole at 15-16M" option. It's called
something slightly different in each BIOS

Also, disable the "Boot to OS/2 > 64M" if that option exists.

Didn't we answer this once before?

You can check which drive is giving the message with, say:

cdrecord dev=0,0,0 -scanbus

I have a "no name" 56X reader which gives the error. No error on my CDRW.

Hmmm ... I haven't been burning since I replaced my reader ... this sounds
worrisome (I can still mount CDs in the reader with no problems).

My CTX EZ-Book 800 laptop is running RedHat 6.1. The main modem is
software based so I use a Viking 56K PCMCIA modem instead. I've got
everything I can think of set so that I can hear the modem dial out but
that only works about 10% of the time. The modem itself works fine and
this isn't really a big deal. Just the same, I'd be interested in
knowing whether or not there is something I might do about it or if
anyone's run into this before. Thanks.

I have a davicom ethernet card on my redhat box. All I did was use
linuxconf to tell it what kernel module to use to activate eth0. I typed in
dmfe and linuxconf wrote "alias eth0 dmfe" in my conf.modules. Now when I
start my redhat 6.2 box, the eth0 comes right up each time.

I imagine if you travel to /lib/modules/2.2.x/net (replace x with your
kernel number), you will see a dmfe.o module which resides there. You could
also add the command linuxconf did for me and edit the ifcfg-etho file in
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts and you would get the right Ip, netmask, etc
each time.

try this....

become root and type...
    cd /dev
./MAKEDEV ttySx (you can skip this if your ttyS dev is already setup)
    ln -s /dev/ttySx /dev/modem
    chmod 666 /dev/ttySx
    chmod 666 /dev/modem

then use setserial to setup your irq. io port and uart.

hope this helps

If the modem is an internal one, make sure com2 is shut off in the

Then you must have the ide-scsi module somewhere. Do you also have boot
parameter in /etc/lilo.conf relating to ide-scsi?

No, I just can't type. The point is that you have a proc filesystem.

Yes, but you said you were mounting the ZIP drive. What you seem to mean
instead is that you can no longer eject ZIP disks after you try to mount
the cdrom.

> > Is ide-scsi compiled into your kernel too? If your CD-Writer works and

OK. So in summary:
- your parallel port is correctly configured in the BIOS
- your parallel port modules are loaded with the correct options
- the ppa module loads OK
- you have SCSI support compiled into the kernel
- you are loading the rest of the modules via modprobe at boot-time

This *should* be enough. The fact that it isn't seems to imply that
something else is interfering. Something like the SCSI-support for your
CD-Writer, perhaps? Specifically, the ide-scsi.o module, which
unfortunately is compiled into your kernel. Doctor, you're going to have
to operate!

RedHat must have given you the source tree, because this is Linux! And
if the people at RedHat are sane then you have the source tree matching
your kernel :-)! Don't be afraid; all you need to do is take the *EXACT*
same settings that you have now, and turn a few them from <*> to <M>.

Go to /usr/src/linux and type

# make menuconfig

Top Level:
  - Block Devices
      - IDE / ATAPI CDROM support
      - SCSI emulation support
  - SCSI support
      - SCSI CDROM support

The idea here is that by making the CD-ROM support entirely modular, you
can load either the IDE version or the SCSI emulation version, depending
on what you want to do.

Now:
# make dep; make clean
# make bzImage
# make modules
# make modules_install

Maybe you can even skip the "modules_install" step, because they should
all be identical. You should, however, have one new module called
ide-scsi.o, which should go into the /lib/modules/<correct version
number>/scsi directory.

Now copy the /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage file to
/boot/vmlinuz-test, and edit your /etc/lilo.conf file and put a new
section in:

# Linux without ide-scsi support
image = /boot/vmlinuz-test
root = WHATEVER YOUR ROOT DEVICE IS
  label = UNQIUE LABEL NAME
  optional
  read-only
# End

If your default config has an "append" line then you'll probably want
that too unless it only contains something like "ide-scsi" (which we're
doing away with).

Now rerun lilo:

# /sbin/lilo

You *should* have now added an extra label to your LILO boot loader,
which will give you the option of loading the kernel you have just
compiled. If it doesn't work then your original config should still be
intact. lilo should run without error, of course. Backup your original
lilo.conf file, just in case.

The new kernel will hopefully boot; your CD-ROM drive will be an IDE
drive again (once you modprobe the ide-cd module) and you won't be able
to use cdrecord unless you unload the ide-cd and cdrom modules, and
modprobe the sg and ide-scsi modules instead. HOWEVER, I suspect that
your ZIP drive will work.

No worries; but you're not out of the woods yet. Come to think of it,
are there any other kernels on your installation CD? A kernel capable of
supporting a CD-Writer might be a bit specialised for some people. Maybe
there's a more basic one you could try?

Until you provide us with the output from SuperProbe and X -probeonly

This may not work, but here is a suggestion; if you have a PS/2 to SERIAL
adaptor, I suggest you use it and configure the computer (XF86Config) to use
a serial mouse. I had the *exact* same problem with my Kensington's
Mouse-In-A-Box and it drove me crazy. I don't know why this solution worked

I checked xf86config on my system, and found the mouse options to be
somewhat restricted. XF86Setup has more mice options, as I'm sure do
several other x config.

However you do it, I'd recommend trying the IMPS/2 ( Intelli Mouse PS/2 ?).
If you can't find the option anywhere, go into /etc/X11/XF86Config, and
scroll down to the pointer section, and if you dare, change the mouse
protocol to "IMPS/2". I'd have to exit/restart X for the configuration to
take effect, but I suspect there's a more elegant way to reinitiallize X....

(...in XF86Config)

Section "Pointer"
    Protocol "IMPS/2"
    Device "/dev/mouse"
    ZAxisMapping 4 5
