The card's SCSI ID should be 7. Technically, it can be anything, but 7
is what everybody always uses. Your 1502 card may have jumpers for
setting the card's ID - make sure the driver's setting matches what the
jumpers are set to.

I don't suppose you've double-checked the jumper settings on the card to
make sure that they match the settings in your module options (port
0x340, IRQ 9).

Also, try another IRQ. On my system, IRQ 9 is auto-assigned to a PCI
slot (my Adaptec 2940UW, as it turns out).

If your BIOS allows you to reserve an interrupt for ISA devices (keeping
PCI cards from using it), do so with IRQ 9 and see what happens.

If there's no ID conflict, that's all I can think of.

Hi,

According to http://peipa.essex.ac.uk/tp-linux/tp-linux.html,
the 720 is a MCA machine. AFAIK Linux supports MCA,
but the setup is not a simple one. See
http://www.almeida.onlinehome.de/edocs/mcalinuxe.htm on MCA
on Linux (especially on an TP700, which is also a MCA machine).

Same here, using an HP SureStore 24i on RH6.1. I do notice a "ridge" in the
reel where the end of recording happens and the unused tape begins. I
suppose that could be eliminated with a retension operation, but I don't
think the HP supports that, and besides, it serves to warn me how much of
the tape is actually consumed. (I use dump/restore.)

It turned out that the Xircom driver (or card) doesn't handle APM real well.
I recompiled pcmcia-cs without APM support (./Configure --noapm) and it has
now run approx 24 hours without losing link.

Althought I'm not _really_ happy about not having apm support, I'm figuring
I can still allow my laptop to sleep by adding "/sbin/cardctl suspend" to
the "before sleep" command list with apmd, and "/sbin/cardctl resume" to the
"after sleep" command list (or whatever they're called).

That however will be a job for another day!

Didn't you mention that your SCSI card was on IRQ9? There is a
foggy recall in my mind about something peculiar about IRQ9,
it's amalgamated with IRQ2, or something?

The above statement of yours indicates that it's possible that
Windows sets something right and that this setting survives a
reset, but not a cold boot? You said you've turned off PnP, but
I wonder...

Maybe you should after all try that suggestion about peeling off
hardware, one by one, and let the SCSI card get it's IRQ first.
I also suggest you change the IRQ to the factory default
(IRQ11?). Swap around some. In theory it shouldn't matter what
IRQ is assigned to what hardware, but in real life it
surprisingly often does.

I use my PM 5.0 only from DOS. You can let make a Caldera DR-DOS

There's even a mouse driver and a CD driver incorporated.

Just because it doesn't show up in your BIOS like the ISA card does
doesn't mean it doesn't work. Usually the BIOS will list all the ISA
PnP cards when it sets them up, but it doesn't do that with PCI cards.
As for the sound blaster pro compatibility, this doesn't mean you can
use it under Linux with the sb driver, it just means that the windows
driver can emulate one for DOS games. Under Linux it is supported,
but the kernel doesn't automatically configure sound cards. You will
need to use the ESS Solo-1 driver. Once you load the module, it
should be configured automatically -- no need to specify IRQ and DMA
settings like with the AWE64.

I had better luck running the 2.4-test8 kernel, it supports that
card. Also, for some reason, that card and the parallel port at 0x278
didn't play well together. I moved the parport to 0x3bc and the card
worked.

Hope it helps.

Thanks!

After a lot of digging i found the arguments available for the ncr module. The problem
was that it doesn't default to asynchronous transfer mode ( i suppose to increase HDD
performance) I loaded the module with a sync:255 (which turns it into asynchronous
transfer mode only) I was able to burn cds without a problem.

Thanks again.

Hi, there,

I got a question. I have an old machine whose BIOS and motherboard is
not PnP. It has a small SCSI hard disk which is seen as "C" in windows.
I don't want to use this disk anymore because it is too small. I would
like to install my new IDE hard disk. The old machine has IDE slots on
the board.

My questions are:
1. Can I disable the SCSI harddisk? If I just physically pull out the
disk, I think the BIOS will not pass. I did not find a way to disable it
from BIOS.
2. If I can not disable the SCSI disk, how can I install Linux on my IDE
disk and make it bootable? Will this IDE still be hd0 in Linux? And if I
want to install Linux on my new IDE disk, do I (or Linux) need to care
about the SCSI disk? Or I just install Linux as if the SCSI disk is not
there?

Thanks,

Davis

Argh.

I've just installed an Onstream DI30 in my slackware 7.1 box (kernel 2.2.16).
I've compiled ide tape support into the kernel (as opposed to making it a
module.

The OS knows it's there (the bootup messages accurately report it attached to
/dev/hdd) /proc/ide/ide1/hdd has all kinds of nifty information about the
device, that all seems to be correct, yet any attempt to use tar/mt/etc with
/dev/ht0 yields an Input/output error.

I've done a lot of searching on the net and found that other people were
experiencing this in the past, but I've been unable to find any posted
solution.

Any help at all would be appreciated...

Thanks!

Depending on the BOIS you have, it may allow you to choose which
one (SCSI or IDE) to try to boot up first. If it does, that solves
your problem. If not, you can go into the SCSI config (Ctrl -A for
adaptec cards) and set/delete the bootable device ID. This should in
effect tell the controller that none of the devices it has are
bootable.

Hope that helps

It is the include files. You have to add -I/usr/src/linux/include to the
compile command line. Otherwise it finds other copies of header files with
the
same names as the ones it's looking for and you get as you described -
gobs of garbage.

Subject: I reset CONFIG_X86_PN_OFF as NO.
Date: Thu, 21 Sep 2000 02:54:46 GMT

First of all, Thanks Mike !

So I reset the CONFIG_X86_PN_OFF option in "make config" as NO.
After recompiling, the booting procedure seemed to be O.K.
After the hardware checking is done, like device checking, This messages
comes out.
"Freeing unused kernel memory : 68K freed
Kernel panic : no init found
Try passing init=option to Kernel".

I have no idea what's wrong.

Thanks!
c

Thanks for the suggestion. It turns out that the boot floppy from RedHat
6.0 works with the NE2000 driver using AutoProbe on the 60G0611 card (which
turns out to be a DP83905 AT/LANTIC chip). I found the following URL
http://www.national.com/pf/DP/DP83905.html which says that it is "compatible
with Novell's NE2000/Plus industry standard Ethernet Adapters")

For whatever reason, the 6.2 boot floppy is less intelligent.
