Hi !

I'm thinking of buying the new Epox EP-8KTA2 socket A motherboard
(caus'it's cheaper than the ASUS A7V or the ABIT, and my budget is
small...). Anyway, the motherboard has two ATA 100 controllers and my
question is simple, can I install linux on the ATA 100 Chanel ? I
understand how you can do it on the ASUS because the ASUS has also two
other ATA66 controllers and you can start by installing linux from
there, patch the kernel for ATA100 support and then switch to the other
port. Is there a way to trick the machine so that it believes first that
my drive is just ATA66 ? I really don't understand much about hardware
I guess...

Thanks in advance!

I'm running SuSe 7.0, behind a Linksys router, attached to a cable modem,
though Comcast@home. I have a good understanding of TCP/IP, DHCP, etc., but
for the life of me, I am unable to get to the Internet! My NIC is working
fine, as I am able to access, and control the router's configuration. I've
searched the newsgroups, and numerous web sites, and I've found
acknowledgements of the problem, but no solutions. Any advice would
sincerely be appreciated.

I recently got an old monitor, hoping to put it to use on a server. When

Got a new vga->ega cable, but still no luck. Then it is probably a

The monitor is an old AT from '86.Any tips on how (if?) I can get it

I'm trying to install Debian Potato using the floppy/ftp install. I am using
an Adaptec 2100S controller, and the kernel that the install disk comes with
is not seeing the controller. It has a 789x chip on it, so I thought it

What things are those?

What does `cat /proc/cpuinfo' say?

You would definitely notice decreased performance.

I believe Intel still lets you use their CPU testing tools, but I
don't remember where to find them. You'll need a DOS boot disk for
those, I think.

What does the Adaptec startup say? Does it see all devices without
problem? This appears to happen when you access the CD, have you tried it
without the CDRW attached?? You did not mention what you physical config
was? Do you have two CDRWs like the driver scan is trying to say?? It
seems like it finds an IBM disk on lun 0, a Plextor CDR on lun 3, and a
Yamaha CDRW on lun 5. Is that your config?

Therein lies the crux of the controversy over the value of the RISC
approach to CPU design.

The "CISC axiom" is that creating hardcoded instructions is faster;
the "RISC axiom" is that the silicon might be more effectively used to
do things like add additional registers that may enhance the
performance of all sorts of instructions.

You may indeed be correct about the one instruction becoming faster,
but if the creation of such additional instructions eats up a whole
lot of silicon, it might have been more worthwhile overall to spend
the silicon on other things.

I have Kernel 2.2.16.

It says (in "menuconfig") that it has support for intel 820.

You may have a Kernel that doesn't have this built in, in which cause
you will have to build your own.

Do you have the module "i810_audio"?

It should be in the directory: "/lib/modules/2.2.xx/misc/" or
"/lib/modules/2.2.xx/sound/?

If so, check the file "/etc/modules.conf"? It should have a line
referring to the module: "i810_audio":

alias <alias-name> i810_audio

The <alias-name> for your system can be found in the file "rc.sysinit"
and is usually "sound" or "sound-slot-0".

I am not sure about PCI support for a Kernel that old. You should check.

I have a 3Com/USRobotics 3CP2976 which works fine as a modem. I have heard
that it is not fully supported for voice applications.

With PCI you cannot know the I/O address or the interupt number because
these are configured by your BIOS. So, the "setesrial" command is:

    setserial /dev/ttyS2 port <I/O port> irq <irq> autoconfig

To find <I/O port> and <irq> you need to run:

    lspci -v | less

after you install the modem.

Hi,

Not to answer my own question, but in case anyone
else gets burnt with this problem, here goes:

Red Hat 7.0's boot disk only contains a small sample
of scsi cdrom drivers needed to read your scsi cdrom drive.

To get access to the rest of the scsi drivers, you
have to make up your own floppy from an image
on CD-ROM #1. From Linux, you can use the
following command:

      dd if=/cdrom_mount_point/images/drivers.img of=/dev/fd0 bs=1440k

The images directory also has a DOS method of making
the disk as well.

Editorial comment: Red Hat should include this disk with
their distribution.

Have either of you tried the 3c59x module instead? I've had a number of
problems with 3c90x that were just plain weird and stupid, while the
cards in question (3c905B models) worked just fine with 3c59x. They
performed very well at 10Mbit; could not test them at 100Mbit as both
times the other parts of the network (switches, cabling) were not up to
snuff for 100Mbit. 3c59x should work for 100Mbit though.

BTW, mitch, if you can avoid it, don't compile your networking support
directly into the kernel. It makes it difficult to diagnose and test
problems when you can't unload modules and/or reload them with different
parameters. And Carson, replies on Usenet go *AFTER* the text you're
quoting. That makes it easier for people who jump into the middle of
threads to pick up on the conversation. HTH,

useful to the $BIGNUM people who lurk. The problem with sending E-mail

lots of people find interesting... an E-mail reply to a question can
only be used by the receiver, while a post can be read by hundreds if
not thousands of users.

You mean they included a floppy with a driver that didn't work? I
avoided the problem because I stocked up on the DEC-chip version
of the card when I found out they were changing. Do the new ones
work as well after you get the driver installed? And do the latest

I use RH 6.2 with a ps/2 mouse. I had to change my genious netmouse
(which worken without problems) for a new aopen netmouse. However now te
wheel doesn't work. I tried imps/2, and genious protocol without
success. What do you suggest?

: Eh? Distro choice has little relation to cluefulness; I've seen some

: my main machine... I just don't usually use it.

Nevertheless, there has to be a correlation. "Evolutionary" pressures
are at work. Distros survive on peoples machines only if they can gain
a toehold in the first place, then they have to survive daily use, and
then they have to survive competition for their diskspace with other
distros seeking the same niche.

Getting the toehold depends on eliciting the aid of a cohost. The
cluefulness of the cohost and the minimal cluefulness level required by
the distro tend to mean that the clueless have most success installing
SuSE, Mandrake, or RH (in that order). But another factor is the
cohosts evaluation of the effort required, which is dependent on
advertising by the distros and the cohosts opinion of themselves. Here
most cohosts tend to have an adjusted opinion of their own cluefulness
and to have heard a lot about RH (in the states), so the clueless
predispose towards installing RH. Another actor is the perceived reward
per effort. Here the predisposition is towards Mandrake.

I.e., yes, Bayesian logic will say that a person who uses redhat is
probably clueless, because redhat is a predominant install choice of
the clueless.

They're certainly all over shops "here" :-).

Since RS is in the vicinity, I'll try and ask him when debian hurd will
hit the high street.
