Fdisk has a bug that causes it to register cylinder count modulo 65536.
There may also be a BIOS bug that can not see drive sizes above 32GB.
This is 33554432 blocks, close to the value that you are reporting.
The first problem is handled by using cfdisk instead of fdisk. The second
problem may require a BIOS upgrade or the addition of a Promise IDE
controller. I had to use a Promise controller and cfdisk to get the
proper capacity from a 46GB Maxtor drive that I recently purchased.

Well, in my case (just bought one a month ago), the floppy had instead of
a driver, a .txt file that gave the (old) URL for Becker's updated drivers
page. It was a little bit annoying since the URL they gave 404'd, but I
just tried the root page at cesdis.nasa.gov, which helpfully pointed me to
scyld.com where the new driver site is.

Once I compiled pci-scan and tulip as downloaded from Becker's site (mostly
trivial -- the only complication being the necessity of having modversions.h
accessible, so don't do a "make clean" after compiling the kernel), it has
worked just as well as older LinkSys cards have for me.

Unsure about that. I know the stock 2.2.17 kernel (as available in Debian
unstable) does not contain the latest version of tulip.c, and I haven't
ventured into the 2.4.pre* area yet.

kernel not working with a 700MHz tbird....

I had the same NIC in my Mandrake 7.1 setup. A number of drivers including
the Rhine ones worked, but communication was never better than pinging.
In the end I switched to an Intel Etherexpress Pro and never looked back.

Are you using /dev/gpmdata in raw mode? I found I had to set it to
MouseSystems to get things working with "-R msc" (added to /etc/gpm.conf
under Debian). The X server (Version 4) has MouseSystems as its protocol.
I think I've also got gpm doing the 3 button emulation. I expect I'll have
to revisit this if I get a wheel mouse.

just to add one more point -- the impetus behind RISC is the first
place was that compilers were (and still are) only using a small
subset of the instructions available on a CISC chip.
since assembly coding seems to be on the way out (except in
special cases were you need to get close to the bare metal), it seems
to foolish to add another instruction which will not be use regardless
of its speed.
all those MMX, 3Now! &c instructions seem to be ignored by, e.g., gcc
so it's not like they are doing many people much good.

Go and get the latest via-rhine driver from
http://www.scyld.com/network/ethercard.html
v1.01 of the driver doesn't support the VIA VT3065 Rhine-II.
Given the output from your via-diag command, you may encounter the same
problem I encounterd once you'll have compiled the latest via-rhine driver.
If your NIC hardware address doesn't appears correctly in the output of
ifconfig (if you get 00:00:00:00:00:00 like with via-diag), try these two
commands before loading the via-rhine module :
pci-config -S -# <the pci number of you NIC>
pci-config -W -# <the pci number of you NIC>
It works for me. I don't know why, but it works.

Is there any support for the Sandisk parallel port
SmartMedia readers under Linux? I've found some info
about the USB versions, but I've got a parallel port
model that I would like to use.
Thanks,

In your dmesg there should be an eth0 entry and there isn't. Your card is not
being detected. Maybe your card isn't installed correctly. Sometimes when you
install a card it doesn't get pushed in all the way, it should snap in.

Subject: TEX/LaTEX dvi for HP/Xerox
Date: Sun, 12 Nov 2000 01:52:27 GMT
I use "dvi2lj" for my current printing ( using a HP II+P).
It has died. So, I would like a new printer. But I'm lost
when it comes to what to use for TEX. I am looking at
Xerox Workcenter390 and XE88 ( both scanner/printer/
copier and FAX), and a HP3200 ( scanner/copier/
printer). All products are laserjet.
