Hi all,

Is the Panasonic KXL-RW10A CD-RW drive compatible with Linux? Does anyone
has experience on setting up this device to work with Linux Mandrake 7.2
(kernel 2.2.19-4.1mdk) or other linux? This drive has a PCMCIA SCSI
interface. When I plug the card into my notebook, the kernel can detect
the PCMCIA card and assign IRQ and others for the card. I'd like to ask
what other steps are required to setup the drive for CD burning in linux.

Thanks in advance.

Subject: Redhat 7.1/Mandrake 8.0 Hardrive Problems
Date: Sun, 20 May 2001 15:57:35 -0700

Alright kids, here's the story:

My pertinent hardware layout is:

MB - Abit-kt7-raid\
HD - IBM Deskstar 7200 30gig
PROC - Thunderbird 900

I'd been running a couple distros on my system (first RH 7.0 then Mandrake
7.0? 7.2?) for a while with no problems whatsoever. I did a clean install to
MDK 8.0 and now I get an error message dumped to my console by the kernel
about every 10 seconds or so:

hda: dma_intr: error=0x84{DriveStatusError BadCRC}
hda: dma_intr: error=0x51{DriveReady SeekCompleteError}

I did an install of RH 7.1 (which also uses the 2.4 kernel) and I'm getting
the same probelm. I've already swapped out my IDE cables and reformatted the
disk checking for bad sectors, and used low-level disk utilities from IBM to
check for hardware problems.. so its not one of those... Can anybody help?
Is there a kernel patch for this anywhere? Am I high and dry?

Thanks a million,

Andrew Murray

If you plug the card in and the drive is recognized, the battle is more
than halfway won. Once the drive is plugged in, you should be able to
read a disc in the drive by mounting /dev/scd0. If you can do that, all
you should need to do is run "cdrecord -scanbus" and find out what
device the drive is recognized as (probably /dev/sg0 or 0,0,0). If you
get something rational out of that, just use cdrecord directly or start
one of its frontends like XCDRoast.

(A SCSI CD-RW in Linux is plug-and-go, assuming the SCSI card is
working.)

If that doesn't work: http://pcmcia-cs.sourceforge.net/ and poke
around. HTH, post here and include all error messages if it doesn't
work....

Subject: Problem using USB hub
Date: Sun, 20 May 2001 18:41:04 -0500

I have a VALinux Varstation 27. It has an Intel SE440BX Motherboard.
It is setup as a dual boot machine with two SCSI disks, one with
Windows 98 and the other with (currently) RH6.2. I plan to upgrade
to RH7.1 so I can use more USB devices, but I've encountered the
following problem. I now have two USB scanners (a flatbed and negative)
connected to it using both ports. I would like to also connect
a smartmedia reader for a digital camera. So I got a Belkin 4 port
USB hub. I can get it working on a laptop and my wife's Dell,
and I can also get it working on the Varstation, but if I shut
down or just reboot (which on this machine makes it start from
scratch), the machine appears to hang, probably in the hardware
check. The monitor green power light comes on briefly and then
switches to orange and stays that way. I can't see anything on
the monitor. I presume the boot up sequence is somehow confused
about what it sees on the USB bus. I don't hear any disk activity
suggesting the machine is booting. But I must admit that this
machine takes a long time to boot because of the memory check and
the check of the SCSI bus, so it is remotely possible I didn't
wait long enough, and the problem is some monitor/USB conflict,
although I doubt that. There is nothing I can
see in the BIOS that might be relevant except that legacy
USB is disabled. (I doubt if any of the devices I have
are "legacy devices".)

Has anyone else seen something like this?

Is this something that I might be able to fix by upgrading my
BIOS? Is there any chance doing that would mess up something
else up?

I've called VALinux, but they don't have any ideas, and Belkin
just says they follow the USB standard.

I can put my compact flash card in it's pcmcia adaptor into one linux box
running RH7.0 with the 2.2.17 kernel, and it works just fine, it's recognized
properly, I mount it (hdc1) and get the pictures off it -- great.
Then I try the same thing in a box running RH7.0 w/ 2.4.3 kernel and it again
reads it just fine -- I can mount it and copy the pictures. However, when I
unmount it (on the 2.4.3 box) and take the card out, the box locks right up,
totally crashed.
I didn't have to do one tiny bit of config to get it to work on the 2.2.17
box, it just worked. So what's wrong with the 2.4.3 box?

I know nothing about them. I suspect this is an Alpha project that was

Try the kernel command-line parameter "apm=power-off" on SMP systems
with kernel version 2.2.x. Kernel parameters are specified from LILO.
If your kernel is compiled with the correct settings and the BIOS of
your motherboard is well-behaved, this should work. (Redhat enabled
it in its 'kernel-2.2.17-14' binary package, but disabled it again in
'kernel-2.2.19-6.2.1'. I don't know why.)

I have not tried 2.4.x yet, but a glance at the source code reveals
that the APM code has been modularized. So, you can now insert it as
a module. Inserting it with the parameter "power_off=1" would enable
the power off function. (If not already enabled, you can remove the
module and re-insert it with the parameter.)

I don't have a Phoenix bios to play with. Usually there is a check box or
question like "Is this a PnP OS", or there might be something about manual
or auto configuration. The idea is to let the BIOS do the PNP configuration,
and not the OS.

Changing IRQs is not a good idea. The whole idea behind PCI/PNP is to let
the box find free addresses and IRQ's. The problem with the OS doing the
configuration is that it doesn't necessarily update the hardware. If you do
a 'cat /proc/pci', you should see an entry for an ethernet controller,
with an address and an IRQ.

the HOWTO, http://www.gui.uva.es/linux/HOWTO/Plug-and-Play-HOWTO-1.html

will give you some idea of what is involved, but it unfortunately doesn't
address specific BIOSes.
