limiting httpd sockets.

Hi all.
i have a linux server with PII 400 and 128 MB ram and 100MB swap
partition.
Now, the httpd server (apache) open lots of sockets.
Is there a way to limit this ?
can i run the web server through the inetd ?
will it be better ??
