That would not be mySQL - that would be you accessing a binary file on the disk. whether that file will be a myISAM table file remains to be seen - I think you will find that writing access libraries for a myISAM file will be more difficult then using other formats : the myISAM format is highly optimised for use with the mySQL database server.
of course - since mySQL is GPLed, you can try to locate the sources that access the myISAM files (should be easier to do with mySQL 4 then with 3) and use that.
