FWIW, I am using something called 3Com US Robotics (if I read the fine print on the box right, it is made by 3com, USR brand) 56K modem "Model 5630" - just picked it up from a little shop in the main shopping street of Herzlia. It's external. I don't remember the price, but I do recall it didn't seem excessive to me more than a year ago. I did not invest much effort into modem hunting then.
