Reading through that thread I suddnly realized something.
A couple of days ago I've decided to tweak my nVidia driver using XF86Config 
and the document from the site.

At some point I've decided that I need to add the line:
Option "RenderAccel" "on"
to my XF86Config.

Second reply in the thread from linuxworld yields:

So, I've commented the line Option "RenderAccel" "on", and added the 
mem=nopentium option to grub.conf ...

I'll now try back KDE to see if it hangs...
