Well, what do you know....
Guess that after 5 hours of splashing in this swamp I got my self worked 
out :)
Anyway, thanks Lior, after removing all XMMS remains from my machine 
your solution worked on the first try.

licensing problems between RH and the mp3 decoder inventors (or 
something like that) they couldn't include it in the XMMS rpm for RH8.0.
I then d/l the following RPMs:
xmms-1.2.7-22.i386.rpm

Installed them, and restarted XMMS and nothing...
The most annoying thing of all is that when trying to run a .mp3 
file... the player converts it automatically to a .wav file with the 
same name that he places (again automatically) in my home directory...

I've always used xmms-mpg123 from 
http://havardk.xmms.org/dist/xmms-1.2.7-rh8-rh9-rpm/

works fine for me.
