The keyphrase here is "different times". Since you don't play games and work at the same time, then you can swap out the unnecessary programs. They'll be swapped in later when you return. Just make sure you have enough swap. Principle of locality, remember? Actually X itself doesn't take that much memory. KDE uses as much memory as a number of X servers. It seems to take much memory because it shares memory with many programs.
