Quoting Rafi Gordon, from the post of Sat, 02 Sep: > CONCLUSION > Linux software RAID provides redundancy across partitions and hard disks, > but it tends to be slower and less reliable than RAID provided by a > hardwarebased > RAID disk controller.
depends on the model, number of controllers, etc. the fact Linux can make mirrors of just some of the partitions, uneven disk sizes, across controllers (my home MoBo has two SATA ports from SIS and two others from the nForce chipset). it is not dependent on the controller so you don't lose the data if you have to transplant the disks... in short it's a bit more flexible, and some installations need that. It does not pretend to be the best solution, it's just a different solution, and it saved me a few times at a very low cost. I haven't done any benchmarks though, so I can't comment on the speeds. -- A man-made self Ira Abramov http://ira.abramov.org/email/ ================================================================= To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]
