depends on the model, number of controllers, etc. the fact Linux can
make mirrors of just some of the partitions, uneven disk sizes, across
controllers (my home MoBo has two SATA ports from SIS and two others
from the nForce chipset). it is not dependent on the controller so you
don't lose the data if you have to transplant the disks... in short it's
a bit more flexible, and some installations need that.

It does not pretend to be the best solution, it's just a different
solution, and it saved me a few times at a very low cost. I haven't done
any benchmarks though, so I can't comment on the speeds.
