Hi David few things to try. First, do you have elogviewer? Maybe during one of your updates you needed to make some changes. elogviewer will show you per package, if you had to do something. Alternatively you can check /var/log/emerge.log can you give you a hint.
Elogviewer is very useful. The second thing that is worth trying is revdep-rebuild. The problems happened after emerge world?
