And to add the flip side, don't sell yourself if you are not worth it. If you don't know something or are not very good at it, the last place you want to learn is at a customer who pays by the hour. Do a job on your own as a demo and learning platform, or even better a pro-bono (free to a good cause) job.

As for the rates Sammy mentioned, note that if you go through an agency or headhunter, that will be the rate they charge, and you get a cut of that. How much depends upon what you expect with the money, if you are paid between jobs, etc.
