He may need to turn on font anti-aliasing for non-MS programs. By
default, Windows XP does not anti-alias Firefox fonts, and they do
look terrible.

If Chrome OS will suit his needs, then he should know that the current
Ubuntu does everything that Chrome OS will do and more, except the
fast boot and integration with Google services out of the box.
