It's not. Uswsusp will complain about the swap file not having the correct name, and AFIK can't be told to go on without it.

The message appears after the swapon, and are easily confused as being related.

Is swap defined in the grub menu or in a file on the intial ram disk? That's why I pointed to uswsusp, it saves a pointer to the swap file in the intial ramdisk image.

You have to dpkg-reconfigure it if you change swap files.
