Yes, it is possible for you to type www.somename.com in your browser and
access pages on your harddrive.

For this you will need to setup Dns, see if you  have a nameserver 'named'
installed on your linux box.If not then you will have to install bind8 and
bindutils which come in rpms.
Check out the DNS-howto on linuxdoc.org , the howto tells howto setup ur own
domain on a linux box.
