Hi. TNT2 is supported by utah-glx. go get it from
utah-glx.sourceforge.net. The stuff about no AGP/DMA
and no DRI for TNT2 is true. But 12fps or Quake is
better than some sfp (for seconds-per-frame) ... ;-)
XF4.0 comes with its own mesa, but *only* supports DRI
modules for h/w acceleration of OpenGL. currently DRMs
(DRI modules) are available *only* for 3dfx cards and
Matrox cards. Precision Insight is working on others.
Support for 3dfx cards is good (altho mine *refuses*
to work). For all u TNT2 guys out there, go get a copy
of the source for utah-glx, and build u're self a
libGL.so, and replace the /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1.2,
which comes with XF4. The Mesa libs are *not* shipped
with earlier releases of XFree86. XF4 is the first
release to integrate Mesa into it.
Please note that Q3A comes default with 3dfx
accelerated libGL.so. Either delete this or mv it
somewhere else. Q3A tries to find the OpenGL libs
(libGL.so) in the following order:
1.libMesaVoodooGL.so (this might have changed in the
latest release)
2. libGL.so
So please take care that the right libGL.so (the
utah-glx libGL.so) is being loaded. check all the
paths in u're ld.so.conf, if there are any redundant
libGL.so and delete them, or mv them. Please also
notice that u need not use Q3A to check if u're OpenGL
H/W acceleration is working or not...u can try with
Mesa demos, esp. those in the 3dfx directory, which
*require* to get some fps (or its sfp all the way ;-).
u can also set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable to point
to the right libGL.so. Please make sure u run ldconfig
after putting the right files in, to update the cache.
I hope this helps. This is only based on experience. I
*dont* have a TNT2. Please get back to me, if u face
any problems. I'll try my best to help out.
btw, if u have the *original* of UT, get the latest
OpenUT, from openut.sourceforge.net, which uses OpenGL
on linux, to play it in Linux. IMNSHO, UT kix Q3A's
A$$!
Nikhil.
