Just do this - cat /proc/pci | grep 2415 | grep 8086.
If you see any output then the latest alsa drivers should work with your
hardware. If not, then you may have to wait longer.
I had same experience yesterday evening in a friend's lab. He has
a i810 based box, and I was trying to setup sound on it. I have alsa
0.5.5, with a homemade patch to the intel8x0.c (which I have contributed
to alsa project long ago). But it didn't work, invistigating more -
through /proc/pci - revealed that the bios didn't have a clear
"enable/diable" setting for on-board ac97 codec. And for some reason the
bios was disabling the ac97 codec part of the i810 chipset, which makes
the whole ac97 controller on i810 invisible, and defunct.
You can check whether you belong to this unfortunate category by
the proc/pci test. Moreover during the bootup, the bios should report
"multimedia controller" just before you get lilo: prompt.
If you indeed have this kind of hardware, then wait a few days, I
will work on this problem and try and get a utility to re-enable the i810
ac97 codec.

PS: BTW the mobo at my friend's lab is a "Mercury" board. So if you are
planning on buying a machine/mobo, stay away from this mercury i810 mobos.
