tif files are binary files.  tif is an image format like gif, jpeg, bmp pr
png.  That would explain why you don't see a formatted document when you
open the attachment that you saved.  Use an image viewer like xv (which,
from what you mentioned, might not be installed on your system) or gimp to
open and view the tif image file.
