Your post was very well written. You have document the steps involved in
solving this particular problem. I wish more posts to LIH were written as
lucidly.
I want to point out that you do not need to go through all these steps to
simply have a windows based dictionary look up program. You can start
using clients that use the DICT protocol (a standard). See
http://www.dict.org/ for information on the dict protocol servers and
clients. dict is a command line dictionary lookup client. gdict is a
GNOME dictionary client. There are many more.
