hi,
i just make another extensive search through the
/var/log/messages file. a particular line caught my attention.
dma for /dev/hdc disabled.
and when subsequent mounts of cdrom the was no such error message.
that was strange. i looked for options in the bios for the dma settings. the dma for
secondary master was
disabled. a friend of mine had played with the bios in my absence it seems.
i am sorry that i posted a question without making a real extensive troubleshooting.

Is your cdrom Acer 50x? Mine is and it gave the same problem..after some
time, windows stopped reading my cdrom and the DOS stopped reading my cdrom.
I guess something is wrong with Acer 50x.
