you _can_ run fetchmail with -l ...

from 'man fetchmail'

  -l <maxbytes>, --limit <maxbytes>
  (Keyword: limit) Takes a maximum octet  size  argu- ment.   Messages  larger
  than this size will not be fetched and will be left on the  server  (in
  fore- ground  sessions,  the  progress messages will note that they are
  "oversized"). ....
  
remember to have "keep" instead of "fetchall" in your .fetchmailrc or these
mails will be flushed from the server if they are not downloaded.

In the meantime, get in touch with your friends and tell them to zip their
bitmaps before sending them ...
