I'm not an expert but what I have been doing for the 2.2.x kernels is to take
the standard pcq redhat kernel config file (for an i686 system), trim a lot
of junk from it (I dont use ppp, net radio, lots of junk network cards,
pcmcia, etc) using make menuconfig and then save that as a standard config
file.

Then whenever I want to recompile a kernel

# cp 2.2.x.cfg /usr/src/linux/.config
# make oldconfig

I have another standard config file for the 2.4 series kernel as well.
Both can be found (gzipped) at http://www.hserus.net/linuxing.html for what
its worth.
