No you don't have to remove kde to install X... !

What you need is a X server .. kde and other GUI based proggies would be
called clients! .. get the latest from XFree86.org and you can get gcc
from http://gcc.gnu.org/

alternatively you can get a recent CD Distro and grab the required rpms
from there!
