Hmmm happens when the password file ceases to exist. Best I can think - at 
the lilo prompt, try the parameter init=/bin/sh

You should directly drop into a shell.  mount your root partition as rw:
# mount -o remount,rw /

check/open your /etc/passwd and /etc/group. If the passwd file doesn't exist, 
you'll have to make a new one.

remount  / in ro mode:

# mount -o remount,ro /

reboot the machine - you should be able to log in...
