Hi all This is for 2.4.x users. In kernel 2.4.x, a special process/kernel thread is created called as kapm-idled which fires HLT instructions so that cpu doesn't waste any energy when idle. I found that on my home system it's eating much more than 30% CPU and I am experiencing a drastic reduction in performance. A kernel recompile is the only option it seems. You need to turn off particular flag and recompile it.
