Issue Following command
# /sbin/hdparm -d1 -c1 -m16 /dev/hda
# /sbin/hdparm -tT /dev/hda
You will see the improvement. And hopefully that corrects the problem. You
can put the first command in /etc/rc.d/rc.local so that it runs every time
you boot.
