I don't have a slackware CD ;-( But my nearest redhat 6.2 installation
has a netconfig which says (on its start up screen) netconfig 0.7.8
(C) 1999 Red Hat, Inc.

Are you sure? Redhat has a replacement library for dialog/curses,
using slang which they call newt and is based on slang. All their
configuration programs (Xconfigurator, netconfig, mouseconfig and even
anaconda) use this library. If the interface looks like the RHL
installation screens, then it is probably newt based. It also has a
dialog replacement called whiptail ;-)
Anyway, no point in arguing - slackware might have ported and included
netconfig and newt and related stuff from redhat - what I had
suggested in my initial post was a distro-independent method of
network configuration.
