hi,
you can use any of the popular distros'like redhat, mandrake, suse, caldera
etc.these are general distributions.distros like debian,slackware etc are a
lil different from the othe commercial distros in the way the system
files, packaging and os implimentation is concerned.generally redhat and based
systems like mandrake, turbolinux have more support around as it is more
commonly used.but it doesnt mean they are better than the other.all generic
distros can support every thing you want.I would suggeswt you to use redhat
as it is pretty stable, has _more_ support from commercial vendors,in lists
and interms of external packages available etc.and has a good GUI and conf
tools inGUI.mandrake is better that redhat and others in terms of ease of use
and GUI etc.but in my personal experience it is not as stable as the
redhat, debian and others.mandrake aslo comes with apache server with advanced
extranet server extensions from SGI and a lot of modules for apache.and some
one else also pointed out postgres is a good database to use.you can also try
mysql.these both are well suited for medium scale database server perfect for
web backends etc.ans the latest samba2.2 is also available in mdk8.0 i think.

sanjeev
