Got it working with mplayer after upgrading to the latest codec file. There
is also a very good player called videolan at http://www.videolan.org with
GUI front-end too. 

mplayer is however also coming a with a GUI. Due for release any time.

do:
$ cat /dev/null > mybigfile
$ rm mybigfile
