That is precisely what the startx script does.  If you fire
xinit  directly, you do not initialise the things below ...
That is all the difference there is... no loading of client
or server arguments ... startx  is  merely a script to load
these things through xinit itself.

userclientrc=$HOME/.xinitrc
userserverrc=$HOME/.xserverrc
sysclientrc=/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/xinitrc
sysserverrc=/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/xserverrc
