Hello everybody. I want to share my experience of installing Linux PCQuest RedHat
7.1. It may be useful to some.

I earlier reported that when I started KDE (Xwindows) some spikes are coming. It is
high when any process is going and less when no programme is running. So I asked for
help how to set the resolution. I was advised to try the Xconfigurator. I tried it and
goofed up somewhere. So again for the 5th time I reinstalled Linux here are the
details :

I started in graphical mode and accepted many of the settings automatically suggested.
It detected my graphics card as Trident CyberBlade (generic) with Video ROM of 8 MB.
It detected my monitor (Microtek Flatron) as MTK0ed9 with Horizontal Sync as 31.5
48.5 kHz and Vertical Sync as 50 70 Hz. It automatically set the screen resolution
to 1152 x 864 but previously I was uncomfortable with this resolution (very small
letters, icons etc.) so I set it to 800 x 600 (and used the Test it now feature).
After that there is nothing for me to do except to change the CDs. After completing
the installation it rebooted automatically.

Xwindows is working fine. No spikes or nothing. Only in Xboing game I could not see
the complete view?

Now I updated the kernel with the one supplied on August 2001 PCQuest as instructed.
While updating I got the following error messages (??) any clues?

        Hdd:command error : error 0x54
        End-request : I/O error, dev 16:40 (hdd), sector ..
        Hdd: command error : status = 0x51 { Drive Ready SeekComplete Error }
        .
        ..
        ..
        Hdd:command error : error 0x54
        End-request : I/O error, dev 16:40 (hdd), sector 1032120
        Error : failed dependencies
        Libz.so.1 is needed by XFree86 FBDev-3.3.6-38
Libz.so.1 is needed by XFree86 SVGA-3.3.6-38
Libz.so.1 is needed by loadimage-4.1.20

I also reinstalled the zlib as instructed in the PCQ.

When I tried to remove the old kernel and kernel-headers it is giving the error
message of failed dependencies that . Is needed by etc.

I updated the kernel with the /sbin/lilo v no problem occurred. I only want to know
why the linux flashed the above error messages .
