What?  No error messages?  You sure?  See if Bind is running or dying all of
a sudden for some reason (telnet dns.server 53), try killall -HUP named, ndc
reload etc.  Maybe an instance of bind is already listening on port 53 and
you try to start another socket on top of it ...

Check if there isn't any adore / lion type worm (though if you are running
8.2.3 that isn't a problem I guess)

One thing you could do is to switch to djbdns - it is extremely lightweight
and (my colleague says) much easier to configure. [note that he's a djb
bhakth who thinks qmail is god's gift to mankind tho'] :)
