The SOX sound playing utilities allow you to play .au files.

Try doing this...

play file.au

The 'play' command is a script around 'sox' and is part of many
distributions. I use slackware and it has sox. I am not sure if RH has it.
MD8.0 has it, so i guess RH 7.1 (PCQ 7.1 in turn)  has it too...
