simply rename your .dat files and give them a .mpg extension.

then use mplayer to play them.

it will work.

in fact, you can also use xmms to play them (after enabling the "smpeg" 
plugin), and pause/rewind/stop with keyboard controls too, but the quality is 
nowhere near that rendered by mplayer, specially when you build mplayer with 
svgalib support and play movies from the console.

now that we have mplayer (find the download link from freshmeat.net), i don't 
think there's need for any other mpeg/vcd/dvd/avi player. it's so far better 
than anything else.

you can use "vcdimager" to rip mpeg tracks from vcd-s. again, look for it in 
freshmeat. there's even an rpm for it. it works great for me. you don't need 
to mount vcd-s, neither for ripping with vcdimager nor for playing with 
mplayer.

when running vcdimager, be careful to cd to a partition that has enough free 
space, for it dumps the .mpg file in the current directory, and we know the 
size of those, don't we?   :-)
