If you use only OSS apps, and the kernel driver works fine for you, then
I don't think there will be significant performance benefits. But the
ALSA driver supports the EMU10K1 synth, which IIRC the kernel driver
doesn't, so if you need MIDI, use the ALSA drivers.
I haven't tried the kernel drivers myself, so I don't know what else is
different between the two.
