Go for an external one. I have a Mercury 56k external from Kobian...it's fab... it uses the same TI chipset that is used by US Robotics modems and as compared to my old Rockwell based modem .. gives me approx 2kbps more than what I used to get. It even has a builtin help menu for the AT commands!!
