hi
there is a usually a BIG difference between internal modems and extarnal
ones
it's very simple ..... the former can drive u craaaaazzzzzzzzy when u try it
on linux, while the latter is more or less non-troublesome.;-)
jokes apart, usually most of the cheap internal modems in the market are
winmodems
they rely on the main processor of ur machine to do most of the work (UART
emulation and other fancy stuff) and so, as some of the tough job is done by
cpu, the price is significantly lower
now the way they make the processor do the thing is often patented and
hence, open source linux drivers are not available for them.
for some, binary drivers are available, but for the others, they do not run
under linux at all
moreover the internal modems put a heavy strain on ur cpu..
external modems (one those go into ordinary serial ports) just work fine
with the linux serial drivers..and they give good performance too.
there are some internal modems available that are "real"..but they are very
rare.
cheers
