It is the first thing to load, recognises devices on your box and thereafter provides services necessary for machine I/O. After the kernel is loaded, the init process to load the rest of the system commences. Where does it lie ? It varies from installation to installation. The usual filename is vmlinuz, zImage, bzImage etc. For LILO boots it is kept in /boot. For loadlin boots, the file (vmlinuz) needs to be on the M$ partition.
