The official NVIDIA drivers for your card will *not* work with the 2.2 series kernel that ships with debian(dunno how old an issue of chip you are talking about .. so other components may not perform at their best either) ... since you seem to be a newbie to linux .. I'd suggest you go with one of the latest versions.. see if you can borrow the CDs from your local LUG or someone with a PCQ subscription. All the same you should still be able to install debian on your box and work on it... only it won't give you the best possible performance for your hardware.
