I have finally satisfactorily run both Heretic & Doom under PCQL7.1.
Here is what I did -
1. Heretic : Heretic-common-1.1-1.i386.rpm always required.

        A. For running under X, used heretic-0.9.5-1.i386.rpm.
Had to copy heretic_share.wad from /usr/share/games/heretic
               to /usr/games.
Under X, in a virtual console, changed to /usr/games and ran the
command
               ./xheretic -mode 640 480 -nosound.
Works both as root as well as a user.

        B. Also under X, used heretic-fastx11-1.1-1.i386.rpm.
No need to copy heretic_share.wad (checked OK after erasing the copy
in A).
Under X, in a virtual console, changed to /usr/games and ran the
command
               ./xaheretic -mode 640 480 -nosound -nomusic. Also,
               ./xaheretic -mode 800 600 -nosound -nomusic.(if -nosound &/or
-nomusic
not present, "broken pipe" error is generated.)
Works both as root as well as a user.

        C. For running in a console, used heretic-vga-1.1-1.i386.rpm, and
                svgalib-1.4.1-13.i386.rpm.
Changed to /usr/games and ran the command
                ./vgaheretic -nosound -nomusic.
Works as root. For user, chmod +s vgaheretic did the trick.
I donot have any non-shareware wad file, so could not replace the
shareware wad.

2. Doom : used lxdoom-1.4.4-0.i386.rpm.
Transferred the DOS Wad file doom2.wad to /usr/share/games/doom,
Have also tried with the DOS shareware wad file of Doom - OK.

Under X, in virtual console, changed to /usr/games and ran ./lxdoom.
Had to edit /root/.lxdoom/boom.cfg for screen_width 790 and
screen_height 530 for filling up the screen.
As a user, had to edit /user/.lxdoom/boom.cfg as above after the first
                ./lxdoom.

Under console mode, as root, changed to /usr/games and ran ./lsdoom.
As a user, had to chmod +s lsdoom in /usr/games.

Under virtual console, ./lsdoom works, but on quitting the game, X
gets
                disturbed and hangs.

So, finally, I am able to play even as a mere mortal.
Thank you Mr.Bish & Mr.Tathagata, once again.
K.Ghosh.
