I have a sound file (a voice recording which has a background hiss)that
plays properly when I cat it into /dev/audio .. but I'm not able to
convert it into any other format.. sox adds a LOT of extra crackling
noise into it... and you can't make any sense of the voice.

The command I used with sox is...

sox -t ul -r 8000 file.au file.wav

I want to convert it into mp3 so that it occupies less space and I can
also reduce the hiss using the graphical equalisers.

tools , tips , pointers anyone ??

Kingsly
