I had a freshly built Linux box, kernel 2.4.17 with the xfs patches from SGI. Ran postfix+cyrus for 10 days, no load at all. Started named yesterday. Box dies with high CPU load. I had reported this problem earlier with squid (RH 7.1 patched all the way).
Does pthreads poke around in the kernel? If yes, then the VM problems are far more likely to be due to pthreads and something else interacting. The system is a P III 500, 1GB RAM 1 x 4.5 + 2 x 9GB SCSI on Adaptec SCSI controllers. Someone forward to LKML please, if duplicable only with programs linked to libpthreads.
