Hard disk wise all Seagate IDE hard disk available in Nehru Place, Delhi
in the recent years are crap :). Other than that hard disk failures
would have symptoms like files dissapearing mysteriously, DMA error's on
the console and error messages in the system log.

Kernel oops probably are due to faulty hardware other than hard disk
like memory, motherboard, smps fan not cooling sufficiently ??? Umount
not working is probably because of some network filesystem becoming
unavailable. I assume you dont get all the messages in one go !! Hope
you dont have a VIA motherboard - the kernel crashes while shuting down
on those beasts :(.

Just a note this post is not really for LIP unless you are experimenting
with kernel modules which could have caused the oops.
