Thanks for your inputs everyone. Here is what I plan to do: I've decided to build/compile the new kernel and install rather than trying to patch the packaged RH-7.2 kernel.
1. I have installed the complete kernel 2.4.17 source from kernel.org 2. I am using e2fsprogs-1.25-1.i386.rpm from the rawhide site (as the README in kernel documentation asks for this version) 3. Assuming that the Ext3 is not a problem I will do the usual make, make xconfig, make depimage etc.. and install the new kernel alongside the existing one. Lets hope it works. In case anyone knows otherwise I would like to know before I find it the harder way.
