yeah very similar, though not exactly fully compatible. But it wouldnt be
too much of work to convert a matlab script to octave if it does not use
special toolbox routines.

 The other advantage of using octave is its builtup on a C++ library,
which you can use directly. I think even matlab has such an option but one
has to pay through the nose to get this facility.
