This is mainly to be used with the demand dialling features of pppd. For example, if you have demand dialling activated, you can say that DNS traffic is not reason enough to bring up the PPP link. Or, if the link has nothing but DNS traffic, consider it to be idle, and take it down. Or other similar filters.
