hi, i had a similar problem with a gvc 33.6 modem bought from a dubious source (it worked fine on windows though).i tried every thing includindg various dial up scripts and even various distros but to no avail.finally i just bought a new modem and voila, the problem was solved.after that i lent my old modem to some linux punters and they too were baffled by the problem.
