As I said, for most normal use.  Anybody using the stuff on a large scale will 
have a fairly unique cocktail of patches.

Or for example take a look at mutt ... there are tons of patches there, not 
all of which are supported by the most common rpm builds around.

That's a good thing with freebsd ports - you can compile your own, but it 
becomes very easy to specify compile options + patches

[frodo#]mutt-devel: make install clean -DWITH_MUTT_SSL -DWITH_MUTT_POP_IMAP

etc etc.
